On your Mark, Set, Bling!

“One can’t allow oneself to be bullied into abandoning one’s dream.”

– Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical romance-drama, Bajirao Mastani gets the full treatment of the Maratha history. Starring Ranveer Singh as Bajirao Bala Balaji Bhat looking extremely convincing to play the stimulating part of the entire narration, Deepika Padukon as Deewani Mastani, the half Rajput and half-Muslim princess of Bundelkhand looking real, alive and striking and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai, the wife of Bajirao who gave a marvelous performance. The trio makes the movie transcend beyond our eyes and ears. The movie also casts Tanvi Azmi as Radhabai, Milind Soman as Ambaji Panth, Mahesh Manjrekar as Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Aditya Pancholi as Shripad Rao, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi as Chimaji Appa, Anuja Sathe as Bhiubai and many other good actors.

Bhansali’s impressive extravaganza shows the 18th century warrior-hero determined to establish Hindu rule across the subcontinent but the main focus is on the married Peshwa’s passion for Mastani. Bhansali went successfully overboard and created an ‘Aaina Mahal’ for the song “Deewani Mastani Ho Gayi” which is one of the highlights of the movie  (and is my absolute favorite part of the whole movie) If one was to describe the set design, cinematography and the costumes which were elaborate and appropriate as the period described, one would really have to sit with a dictionary full of adjectives to do so.

The movie guarantees a feast for your eyes and ears alike. If you’ve not watched it yet, get set to be bedazzled by some good, old-fashioned (quite literally) bling!
