Fight between ‘real’ and ‘ideal self’: Sia’s Elastic heart is set to stun us

“You did not break me

I’m still fighting for peace.”

Sia’s ‘Elastic heart’ is an absolute work of conceptual art. The lyrics of the song are meaningful and give goosebumps every time you watch the video. It talks about the fight between the present self and the past self. Directed by Daniel Askill, the Grammy-nominee and choreographed by Ryan Heffington, they closely convert the song into a praiseworthy performance.

The collaboration between the two artists, Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler, shows a cage fight between the two of them which works well considering the theme of the song about empowering the self. The struggle in Maddie’s freedom, including leaving behind the undesirable self, which was portrayed by Shia’s character can be seen as Alfred Adler’s psychological concept of the real and ideal self, or the contradiction between the “I am” and the “I should”. In the latter part of the video, Maddie was shown as releasing herself from the cage, which can be interpreted as detaching herself from any anxiety and fear.

It’s a great song indeed but the music video is the cherry on the cake. Go ahead, watch the video in the link given below and be the judge of it yourself!
